The Good Worm Project (GWP) ...making a difference

The Good Worm Project

Background

The Good Worm Project I (GWP I) was conceived in 2001 in response to the many farmer queries on earthworms that were raised during the Good Soil Project. The GWP- I commenced in 2002 with an examination of the distribution and abundance of earthworms in relation to orchard management. The project also monitored earthworm life cycles in agricultural systems. The project included a substantial component involving the promotion of earthworm awareness and of soil health. This study measured earthworm numbers and biomass as well as soil physical and chemical properties at over 100 sites on 35 farms.

The GWP I was funded by the Natural Heritage Trust, NSW Agriculture and Tuckombil Landcare Inc.

In combination with the Good Soil Project, this project led to the development of the Soil Health Card for the Northern Rivers Region.

The Good Worm Project II commenced in 2004 with funding from the Natural Heritage Trust, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems and Tuckombil Landcare. The final report for for the GWP II will be published early 2006 and will be available on this website.
